This week we look at what is most likely the world’s shortest commercial flight: a 73 second butt clincher. This redefines the meaning of the term ‘shuttle flight’. Neighbouring towns Kegata and Apowo are barely shouting distance from each other, but separated by a very steep valley (just how steep? Pause the video at 3:37 for a nice overview). Bush pilot Matt Dearden is based out of Timika and takes us on a quick tour of this incredibly short flight. When you’re done watching this video, head over to Matt’s excellent blog for a wealth of knowledge about bush flying. The province of Papua, Indonesia, is one of the least developed regions on earth with few paved roads to cross a region characterised by thick tropical bush and steep valleys. Bush pilots provide an essential service by connecting isolated communities to trade routes and medicine supplies. Most of the pilots flying Papua are either Australian or British, and they like filming their flights which is great for us!
